Sailing, sailing, grab a bottle of beer, a sandwich, and your camera.
After two strenuous days of sitting on the deck or near the pool of our rental house on Peaks Island, we felt it was time to venture onto the Maine-land aka Portland via the ferry. Downtown Portland is all cute and touristy if you like that sort of thing. Our quest for adventure led us to buy tickets for a two hour voyage around Casco Bay with the Portland Schooner Co. Apparently the Casco Bay shores have a rich military history with three forts to boot. The most memorable story from the crew was about a ship sailing between two of the forts during WWII that opened fire and blew up the bathrooms in one of the forts. I did wonder rather amused what happened to that guy. I wonder if he was marched out of the service for blowing up a crapper. In addition to the old forts in the bay, we ventured to a few lighthouses including Bug Light, and the Rams Island Ledge Light, as well as neighboring islands such as Cushing, and House Island. Alas, it was a truly beautiful day for a sailing and we enjoyed our land lubber selves. Of course the key to any successful sail is the inclusion of a 6-pack, ours procured at the conveniently located Shipyard Brewery in downtown Portland.
