The weird and wonderful world of Peaks Island AKA the Coney Island of Maine.

Peaks Island is a small island situated between the ocean and the bay, off the coast of Portland ME.  The island is a natural paradise, which includes a forest and nature conservation area. There is one way on, and one way off the island via a ferry to Portland.  Outside of actually relaxing, we spent our days riding bikes and exploring the island.  The entire island is about 4 miles long and the shores are filled with a rocky landscape as well as shaggy seaweed and reeds galore.   Around the bend from our rental house was a grotto of creations that visitors and locals had developed by creating stacked stone sculptures.  In its entirety, this grotto of sorts was very blare-witch, but really just one of the oddities on the island.  The island is also home to other unique ‘attractions’ such as the Umbrella Cover Museum, a Horse Camp complete with mini horses, and The Battery Steele.  On our adventure to find the Battery Steele, we found ourselves lost in the woods, carefully monitoring the minutes we had until dark.  We were happy to finally find the military instillation and only a little disappointed a day later when we learned it was the wrong one.  We made it out of the woods and before sunset and before we were murdered by a Mainer.  The moral of the story is to enjoy the odd , the mysterious and based on the words of the Umbrella Cover Museum's mantra, to celebrate the mundane in everyday life.

dedicated to the appreciation of the mundane in everyday life. It is about finding wonder and beauty in the simplest of things, and about knowing that there is always a story behind the cover.
