Places of interest while on a road trip to Maine.

We were heading to Maine for a week’s vacation with friends and wanted to take advantage of driving through a region we don’t often visit by making some stops.  We always seem to think there will be more time and more chances to meander through small towns than usually work out on our road trips, and this one was no exception.  But we did make a few interesting, fun and some quite random stops in our rental car (affiliate).

I composted…and survived.

This vacation in Peaks Island, Maine, has been a very different and very much needed break.  It has truly been relaxing; moving between the deck overlooking the ocean, to the window seat, or perhaps the couch, still overlooking the ocean, and when the sun is shining, out to the loungers by the pool.  Sounds rough, doesn’t it.  I was worried before we got here, that maybe a full week of nothingness would be more than I could handle.  Could I truly relax and not want to get out and do everything?

The weird and wonderful world of Peaks Island AKA the Coney Island of Maine.

Peaks Island is a small island situated between the ocean and the bay, off the coast of Portland ME.  The island is a natural paradise, which includes a forest and nature conservation area.  There is one way on, and one way off the island via a ferry to Portland.  Outside of actually relaxing, we spent our days riding bikes and exploring the island.

All you need is Beer...

Outside of NYC stopping for beer becomes a priority because you never know what crazy rules regarding purchasing alcohol a state can have.  In Connecticut, for example one cannot buy beer on Sunday, In Maryland one can only buy beer in a Supermarket, in Pennsylvania you can only buy beer in cases.

Sailing, sailing, grab a bottle of beer, a sandwich, and your camera.

After two strenuous days of sitting on the deck or near the pool of our rental house on Peaks Island, we felt it was time to venture onto the Maine-land aka Portland via the ferry.  Downtown Portland is all cute and touristy if you like that sort of thing.  Our quest for adventure led us to buy tickets for a two hour voyage around Casco Bay with the Portland Schooner Co.
